புனித நீர் தீர்த்தம் ஆகும். தீர்த்தம் என்றால் தீர்க்க வேண்டியது தீர்வது என கொள்ள வேண்டும் . ஒரு வீட்டில் குழந்தை பிறப்பு ஏற்படும் போது தாய் தந்தை முதலானவர்களுக்கு தீட்டு ஏற்படுகிறது அதனை தீர்த்திட நீக்கிட வேண்டி குல மரபின் படி -11, 16, 30 ஆகிய நாட்களில் புனித தீர்த்தத்தைக் கொண்டு தெளித்து புனிதமும் சுத்தமும் அடைய வேண்டும். மேலும் ஒரு பெண் குழந்தை பூப்படையும் போதும் மேலே கூறியது போல தீட்டு ஏற்படுகிறது. அது தீர்வதின் பொருட்டும் புனித நீரால் தெளித்தும் பருகியும் குளித்தும் புனிதமடைய வேண்டியுள்ளது. இதன் காரணமாக உரிய முறையில் உரிய மந்திரங்களால் கலசத்தில் நீரினை நிரப்பி பூஜித்து தீர்த்தமாக்கி தூய்மை பெற செய்வது புண்ணியாக வாசனம் ஆகும்.

Sacred water is known as Theertham. Sacred water is a solution that is capable of solving things. When a child is born, its mother, father and other family members may experience uncleanliness.  Sacred water must be sprinkled on the 11th, 16th or 30th day after the birth of the child In order to eliminate the uncleanliness and restore purity and sanctity. The same applies when a female child attains puberty. Sacred water must be sprinkled, drunk and showered with in order to attain purity. Punyagavachanam entails filling the sacred pot with water and performing prayers and chanting mantras to sanctify it.
