இறந்த பின்பு இறந்தவரின் உறவினர்கள் செய்யும் கிரியை கருமாதி என்பது. இது  இறந்தவருடைய ஆன்ம யாத்திரைக்கு உதவிட செய்யப்படும் முதற்கிரியை யாகும். இது பிரும்பாலும் 16 ஆம் நாள் செய்யப்படுகிறது. சில சமூக, குல குடும்ப வழக்கங்களில் 10, 11 ஆம் நாளிலும் செய்யப்படுவது உண்டு. இதற்கு குறிய பூஜை சேவைகள் தேவையானது கோயில் மூலமாக செய்து தரும் சேவை இதுவாகும். முதல் நாள் இரவு இறந்தவரின் பொருட்டு படையல் போடுவார்கள் மறுநாள் அவற்றை  கடலில் விடுவார்கள் அச்சமயம் கடற்கரையில் புண்ணியாக வாசனம் செய்து கருமாதி செய்து வைக்கப்படும். பின்பு இறந்தவரின் இல்லத்தில் துய்மையின் பொருட்டு புண்ணியாக வாசனம் செய்யப்படும்.

 

Karumathi is a rite performed by relatives after the death of a loved one. This is the first rite that facilitates the departed soul’s journey. This rites is widely observed on the 16th day of death while certain communities and clans observe it on the 10th or 11th day. This service entails the temple providing the required services and prayer items towards this rite. Food offerings are made for the deceased on the eve and given away to the sea, the following morning. Punyaga vachanam and Karumathi will then be performed by the seaside. Punyaga vachanam will once again be performed at the home of the departed in order to purify it again.
